Macon-Thomas Chapter Mission

The mission of the Macon-Thomas West Bloomfield Chapter is to educate audiences across the country about the history and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen – America’s first black military pilots and their support personnel – so their strength of character, courage and ability to triumph over adversity may serve as a means to inspire others to RISE ABOVE obstacles in their own lives and achieve their goals. 2019 IN REVIEW
2020 INITIATIVES & PLANS

Greetings;

  1. I am honored to report to you that 2019 was a great year for our chapter, but we are working hard to make 2020 much better. I am also proud to report the following chapter activities for 2019.
  2. The chapter set up our long awaited Drone Academy and have graduated two classes.
  3. The chapter sent our pilot Instructor to New York for More Training and licensing, where he graduated with a high grade.
  4. The chapter set up a Golf Training Program where we give free Golf Clubs and lessons to deserving students. (More information to come in 2020)
  5. The chapter wants to set up a Tennis Training Camp {More information to come in 2020} 5} The chapter is considering taking more youth to NASA Space Camp in 2021.
  6. The chapter is making plans to go on a field trip to Washington, DC to visit the Historic attractions the city has to offer.
  7. The National Tuskegee Airmen Convention will be held in San Antonio, TX in August, 2020, go to www.tuskeqeeairmen.org for details.
  8. The chapter had a great Christmas Party in December, 2019 and was a sold-out affair.
  9. The chapter's Youth will participate in the Detroit Metro Youth Day Event this summer. This affair is sponsored by the Metro Beverage Association and is expecting apx. 10,000 to 20,000 Youth to attend.
  10. The chapter will continue to Visit the VA Medical Center to show support for our Veterans and theirfamilies.
  11. The chapter will continue to participate in Veterans Day and Memorial Day Parades and Events to show support for our Veterans and their families.
  12. Our chapter will continue to support S. T.E.M. Aviation, Aeronautics, & Community Relations.

Capt. Richard D M. Macon picture
Capt. Richard D. Macon was born in Birmingham, Alabama on August 21, 1921. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Miles College.
Always a formidable competitor, on a bet, pursued and passed all entrance exams and requirements for the Army Air Corps. He trained at Tuskegee and completed Pilot Training School as a second lieutenant. He received further training at Selfridge Field in Michigan and from there went on to Walterboro Airfield in South Carolina.

2015 Michigan Aviation Hall of Fame Lt. Col. Donald Thomas Jr.Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Donald C. Thomas Jr. was born in Detroit, MIon November 14, 1926 and passed away on November 29th, 2011. Donald was always intrigued by aircraft and flight. When an all-Black Fighter Group was stationed at Selfridge Airfield for Gunnery Training near his hime in 1943, he was hooked on flying when he saw the Black flyers in action on several occasions. In early 1944, Donald took and passed the Army Air Corps flying qualification exam.
